  • Overview

    Lead the team responsible for monitoring transactions for potentially suspicious activities using system-generated alerts.


    1. Manage the assigned transaction monitoring team. Interview, hire, set high performance standards, and manage team performance in accordance with all applicable HR policies and procedures. Create a flexible and energized work environment, fostering an atmosphere that enables employee trust and engagement. Inspire confidence and motivate others to perform at their best. Develop and coach staff while effectively addressing performance issues.
    2. Lead daily operations to ensure alerts are acted upon in a timely manner and that they contain complete and accurate information for data collection and documentation. Alerts contain Know Your Customer (KYC) information, relevant account and transaction data, and other information to assist in the investigation.
    3. Review and analyze underlying data gathered by the team to assess reasonable cause to advance an alert to investigations or to clear the transaction. Act as the first point of control in the fraud/AML escalation process.
    4. Respond to questions from the team and provide advice, guidance and training as needed on technical AML/KYC issues and decisions.
    5. Disposition and fully document all alerts, including providing supporting data, analysis and rationale with the case management system in a timely and accurate manner.
    6. Review team output for quality and controls. Suggest and implement operational changes to enhance the ability of the team to identify and document suspicious and/or potentially fraudulent transactions and activities in a more efficient manner.  
    7. Oversee development and implementation of testing for AML systems enhancements from the end user and subject matter expert perspective. Provide feedback to technology and project teams on testing progress, system defects, and act as a key stakeholder for reviewing system changes as one of the key stakeholders and process owners.
    8. Conduct periodic internal account/customer reviews to identify potentially suspicious activity.
    9. Analyze transactional information to identify risks, trends, and potential suspicious activity.
    10. Prepare and present reports and metrics on departmental activities to management. Identify trends and patterns as needed.
    11. Develop close working partnerships with others including appropriate law enforcement agencies, peer banks and other external groups on AML issues and cases. Obtain information and assistance as needed to improve transaction monitoring controls and activities.
    12. Keep abreast of AML updates by attending continuing professional education and webinars, reading professional journals and articles, and networking with others in the profession.
    13. Participate in the development of goals and execution of strategies within the function and department. Engage in strategic initiatives as required by leadership.
    14. Perform other related duties as assigned.



    Required Education/Experience:

    • An undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice, Financial Crimes Investigation, Auditing or related field
    • A minimum of 7+ years’ experience in reviewing and investigating customer transactions and information for potentially suspicious activity and performing AML or financial investigations.
    • A minimum of 7 years’ experience in reviewing and approving Know Your Customer (KYC)files for complex banking products.
    • Extensive knowledge of laws applicable to money laundering including the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), the USA PATRIOT Act, US Treasury AML guidelines, OFAC requirements, and Suspicious Activity Reporting (SAR) requirements

    • Strong analytical and research skills with excellent attention to detail and follow-up
    • A team player able to work effectively in a team fostered, multi-tasking environment with the ability to work under pressure.
    • Proven ability to partner effectively across different departments, including operations, technology, projects, and investigations
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, e.g. Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook; internet and online research systems
